Fresh Semen
Artificial Insemination – Fresh Semen
There are several reasons why stallion owners prefer their stallion be bred using artificial insemination. There is limited risk of injury or contamination to the stallion compared to breeding via natural service. Also it helps some stallions remain in the right frame of mind for competition when collected for AI rather than breeding naturally. These stallions are collected, the semen is processed and the mare inseminated all on site. We offer a package deal for this service with a discounted rate compared with semen collection and artificial insemination performed as separate procedures. We charge a per cycle fee which includes the semen collection, ultrasound scans, the insemination, a post breed check for ovulation. Drugs and agistment are extra costs.
Chilled Semen
Artificial Insemination – Chilled Semen
Chilled semen can be shipped from all over Australia. The semen is collected and processed prior to shipping to Wilmor Downs Equine Services. The semen arrives within 24 hours of collection and is immediately inseminated into the mare. Prior to semen collection the mare owner must have finalised stallion contracts and paid collection costs to the stallion owner or their agent.
We monitor your mare via ultrasound scanning to determine when breeding should occur. We organise the timing of the semen collection, ordering the semen and the shipping directly to us. We charge a per cycle fee for artificial insemination with chilled semen. This fee includes ultrasound scans, the insemination and a post breed check for ovulation. Drugs and agistment are extra costs.
Frozen Semen
Artificial Insemination – Frozen Semen
Frozen semen AI allows mare owners to breed with stallions from within Australia or overseas. Frozen semen keeps for very long periods of time, assuming that it is maintained in liquid nitrogen at the correct temperatures.
If planning to use frozen semen it is best if the semen is shipped to Wilmor Downs Equine Breeding Services before your mare arrives. The time taken for frozen semen to arrive is longer and more variable than chilled semen.
Shipping is usually arranged by the mare owner with the stallion owner or their agent. Breeding contracts and shipping costs usually have to be finalised before the semen is released. It is then sent directly to us where we store it for you until use. We charge a per cycle fee for artificial insemination with frozen semen. This fee includes ultrasound scans, the insemination, a post breed check for ovulation. Drugs and agistment are extra costs.
Semen Collection
At Wilmor Downs Equine Breeding Services we collect equine semen for semen evaluation, fresh semen artificial insemination and chilled semen shipping.
for Fresh Artificial Insemination
Some stallion owners only allow their stallions to perform AI and not natural service. This decreases the risk of injury & contamination to the stallion.
In addition some stallions remain more level headed for competition if they are not breeding mares by natural service. Semen is collected from the stallion, processed and inseminated into the mare immediately.
This process is suitable when both the stallion and mare are at Wilmor Downs.
for Chilled Artificial Insemination
Wilmor Downs Equine Breeding Services ship chilled semen Australia wide.
We routinely collect the semen in the cool of the early morning and ship for Qantas same day or Toll Priority where it arrives the next day.
It is important that the mare owner has finalised the relevant paperwork and service contracts with the stallion owner and paid the shipping and collection fee prior to ordering semen from Wilmor Downs Equine Breeding Services. A chilled semen order form can be found on the “forms” drop down on this website.
For Clients wishing to receive a semen collection from a stallion standing at Wilmor Downs Equine Breeding Services, we would appreciate at least 24 hours notice prior to the collection. Because we are located in a reasonably remote part of Central QLD transporting the semen needs timing and planning.
We collect Monday to Thursday and send Toll Priority overnight or Qantas same day (Friday collections are only same day shipping). The collection and processing fee is $275 (inc.) A Shipping Fee amount will be given when we know the destination of you shipment. These fees must be paid for in full prior to semen being sent. The semen drop off fee from Wilmor Downs to Emerald is $110.
Collections over the weekends may be possible depending on circumstance.
Weekend collections are only shipped on Qantas out of Emerald Airport, more notice must be given if requiring weekend collections. A quote will be given on air transport, from experience prices range from $200 to $350.
